The Indian Army rank wise pay scale is hard to understand for those candidates who don’t know anything about basic pay, grade pay, etc. The aspirant who has a basic knowledge of these terms can easily understand them.

Here we will provide pays scales for every post in the Indian Army. The salary of an army soldier is the sum of different terms like basic pay, grade pay, dearness allowance, house rent allowance and other benefits.

The candidates who will be selected as Soldier GD will have to complete the long training period. In the training period candidates first chosen for Sepoy/ Rifleman then Lance Naik after that Naik then Havildar then Naib Subedar and after it Subedar and then Subedar Major (SM).

If a candidate doesn’t have a graduation degree and completed 12th without Science, then the highest post he/she will reach is SM and will retire as Honorary Captain.

But if the candidate has joined the Indian Army after clearing the NDA or CDS exam then the training period, salary, class is a lot different.

The candidates first selected for Lieutenant after that Captain then Major and then Lieutenant Colonel after that he will be selected for Brigadier the Major General and Lieutenant General.

Grade Pay and Basic Pay by India Army

  • Grade Pay is the total payment that will be depending on the category, pay band and class of employment.
  • Basic pay is the total grade pay and pays in the pay band.

Pay Scale of JCO/ OR

The pay scale for all ranks which comes under JCO/ OR is given below.

Sepoy or Rifleman (Pay Band 1)

  • Pay: 5200-20200
  • Grade Pay: 1800
  • Military Service: 2000
  • X (Technical) group pay: 1400

The Sepoy is the first (initial) rank in the Indian Army. Every year lakhs of candidates are selected for this post through Open Bharti in all over India. The candidates between 17 years to 21 years can apply for this post and should have completed their Metric.

Lance Naik (Pay Band 1)

  • Pay:  5200 – 20200
  • Garde Pay:  2000
  • Military Service: 2000
  • X group pay: 1400

Naik (Pay Band 1)

  • Pay:  5200 – 20200
  • Garde Pay:  2400
  • Military Service: 2000
  • X group pay: 1400

Havildar (Pay Band 1)

  • Pay:  5200 – 20200
  • Garde Pay:  2800
  • Military Service: 2000
  • X group pay: 1400

Naib Subedar (Pay Band 2)

  • Pay:  9300 – 34800
  • Garde Pay:  4200
  • Military Service: 2000
  • X group pay: 1400

Subedar (Pay Band 2)

  • Pay:  9300 – 34800
  • Garde Pay:  4600
  • Military Service: 2000
  • X group pay: 1400

Subedar Major (Pay Band 2)

  • Pay:  9300 – 34800
  • Garde Pay:  4800
  • Military Service: 2000
  • X group pay: 1400

Pay Scale of Army Officers

Lieutenant (Pay Band 3)

  • Pay:  15600 – 39100
  • Garde Pay: 5400
  • Military Service: 6000

This is the first rank that candidates get who will be selected after NDA or CDS. The candidates should have completed their 12th with PCM for this job.

Captain (Pay Band 3)

  • Pay:  15600 – 39100
  • Garde Pay: 6100
  • Military Service: 6000

Major (Pay Band 3)

  • Pay:  15600 – 39100
  • Garde Pay: 6500
  • Military Service: 6000

Candidates would be eligible to become a Major in Army only if he/she served six years as an officer.

Lieutenant Colonel (Pay Band 4)

  • Pay:  37400 – 67000
  • Garde Pay: 8000
  • Military Service: 6000

A person who has served 13 years in the Indian Army will be eligible to be a lieutenant.

Colonel (Pay Band 4)

  • Pay:  37400 – 67000
  • Garde Pay: 8700
  • Military Service: 6000

Brigadier (Pay Band 4)

  • Pay:  37400 – 67000
  • Garde Pay: 8900
  • Military Service: 6000

Major General (Pay Band 4)

  • Pay:  37400 – 67000
  • Garde Pay: 10000

Lieutenant General

Pay Band: 67000 – 79000

There is no grade pay for this post, but the Lieutenant-General have the highest pay.
